Each portal is dedicated to a different landscape that I have personally sat with a watercolor painted in one sitting, on location. I then risograph print each painting, write a love letter to the land or speculative futures short story, research the waterways, plants, animals, and invite the indigenous peoples of that land to write a land acknowledgment and send that 'portal of place' to your doorstep. A full moon reminder to feel curiosity and reverence towards this strange and beautiful planet we are on.

Each portal is dedicated to a different place that I have personally sat with and painted, on location, in one sitting.

I started plein air painting as a meditative practice. A moment to quiet my anxious mind, to sit still with the land and deeply observe the textures of bark and leaves, how the colors change in the light.

I started painting watercolor cards in high school. I’d approach my teachers and classmates with a punny set of designs and take custom orders before holidays.

There’s something so special about my art being the vehicle for messages of love - to a crush or lover on valentine’s day, to a grandmother on mother’s day. Those written down words of affirmation can be read and experienced over and over again without the giver being present.

And now that we continue to wake up in a world that is changing, melting, and desertifying faster than we know how to make sense of or feel about it, I’m writing love letters and paintings to earth and sending them to mailboxes, as a portals of place ~ a full moon ritual to create moments of remembrance and curiosity.

The Potting Shed Post delivers Garden Notes on design and techniques, rotating visits to other gardens, photo postcards, seasonal paper goodies straight to your mailbox every month.

I'm Kathy. I created the Potting Shed Post out of my love of gardening and my desire to share my small backyard garden with fellow gardeners in a tangible and non-digital way. Each month I share tips and insight into design, plant knowledge, garden visits, and seasonal interest. I enclose postcards with photos I took myself in my own garden and gardens I visit. And because I love journaling and stickers there will be a few of those too sprinkled in just for fun.
